about
I promised to remember by writing a song on my 'Postcard for Peace'. It seemed appropriate as one of my first songs as a songwriter was written on a Remembrance Day in 1994.
My high school in Toronto had memorials to WWI and WWII, and our assemblies always included a scroll of the war dead from our school. I often relay this to my students--for me the stark reality and contrast to my own life on Remembrance Day was something that drove me to tears, to thoughtful consideration of how fortunate I was, my generation was, to avoid such chaos and uncertainty.
As a teacher, these assemblies have a different impact. I can't see photos of soldiers with children without transposing my face, my daughter's face, on those photos.
While PEACE is always at the forefront of my mind, I recognize that the soldier is a person in a role destined by the decisions of people in power. Politics aside, on 11/11/11 I remember that I am safe, while others are not.
"Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one "

lyrics
Share me some shoulder,
share me some pain.
March us together,
casket flag draped;
casket heavy, casket weight to bare.
Share me some shoulder,
rain me some tears.
Our boots are heavy.
We'll carry that weight.
Share me lonely,
share me kiss goodbye.
Share me job description,
in action we die.
Casket heavy, casket weight to bare.
Share me some shoulder,
rain me some tears.
Our boots are muddy.
We'll carry that weight.
March me two steps,
march me lullaby.
March me my child,
march me to her eyes.
March my forgiveness,
march me embrace,
march me the fuck
out of this place.
My heart is heavy,
my heart is muddy.
My heart is heavy,
I'll carry that weight.
Share me I'm tired,
March me back home.
Share me I'm tired,
March me back home.
Share me I'm tired,
March me back home.
Casket heavy, casket weight to bare.
Share me some shoulder,
rain me some tears.
